Stephen Tester, Co-founder
Stephen Tester given key role at Rotary
Stephen Tester from Tester & Jones in Crowborough has been appointed Vice President of The Rotary Club of Crowborough. Stephen, who runs the independent funeral director, Tester & Jones with Glenys Jones, has been a member of Rotary in the town for a number of years and has held various roles in the past including Community Service and Fund Raising Chairman.
"As a firm we are very much part of the local community and being a member of Rotary is an extension of that," says Stephen. "Rotary is a great group of people and we do a variety of activities to benefit the people of Crowborough and the surrounding area."
Rotary is all about fellowship in service to one's community. It was founded nearly 100 years ago as an organisation of professional and business people intent on helping people less fortunate than they. The Rotary Club of Crowborough was chartered nearly 60 years ago.
Throughout the year, The Rotary Club of Crowborough supports many events including the Crowborough Hospital Fete and the Crowborough Carnival, as well as individuals. It has an annual Christmas appeal which last year raised £3590.
Recently The Rotary Club of Crowborough donated money to the Groombridge-based Paralympian Will Bayley. He's recently secured a place in the GB team for the London 2012 Paralympics and, as the world table tennis number two, has his eyes on a gold medal. During his career, he has already won more than ten international golds, two silvers and three bronzes.
Will was born with a rare congenital disorder which affects the use of his limbs. When he was diagnosed with cancer at the age of eight, his grandmother bought him a table tennis table to help him through his recovery. He took to the game quickly and began playing competitively aged 12.
"Meeting Will was a real inspiration and we'll all be avidly following his progress during the 2012 Games," adds Stephen.
