Tunbridge Wells to have an auction house again

Tunbridge Wells is soon to have its own auction house again - thanks to antiques expert and auctioneer, Marcus Rowell. The Auction House At Tunbridge Wells - an independent auction house - will be opening its doors on The Pantiles next month, giving local people the opportunity to have their wears valued and auctioned in the centre of Tunbridge Wells.

"I am delighted to be bringing the auction house in Tunbridge Wells back to life," says Marcus. "Having a facility like this locally is integral to the history and culture of the town. We want people to come to the auction house, experience the excitement of an auction and bring along their items to be valued."

Marcus Rowell has been collecting antiques since he was eight years old - when he purchased his very first New Hall tea bowl - and has been working on and off in the world of antiques ever since. He has also worked as a stockbroker in the City and spent 20 years living in France.

Marcus has a wide knowledge of antiques and will usually be able to give valuations on the spot.

"However, if the object is something unusual, then I will ask an appropriate expert to value it on the client's behalf - and that's a free service," adds Marcus. "If it's something particularly unusual or rare - we will market it in the best way possible. We have close connections with experts from many national collections and can seek advice from them where necessary."

With a rich tradition of antique trading in Tunbridge Wells, having an auction house in the town preserves local history, promotes recycling and re-use and is an environmentally friendly alternative to driving out of town to have items valued and sold.

Through its website, The Auction House At Tunbridge Wells will be offering the facility for buyers to bid online for objects.

"Our live online access to our auction room will mean that items in our auctions in Tunbridge Wells can be viewed and purchased from anywhere in the world, not just by those people in the room," says Marcus. "This means that we can always guarantee that you will get the very best price for your object on the day."

The Auction House At Tunbridge Wells is also offering a house clearance service - which takes the hard work and emotion out of selling and disposing of belongings when possibly moving abroad, or when a relative has died.

Marcus has set himself the goal of sharing his love of antiques with local people - including children.

"Antiques have a wonderful way of bringing social history to life," he explains. "I am hoping to share this with school children and other local groups. Even looking at a simple tea bowl can be a history lesson in itself - talking about how it may have been made in China and how it was brought to the UK, or discussing the life of people working in potteries in England - it's something a child will never forget."

He adds: "In the past, I have also gone into care homes and taken historical objects in to chat about with patients with Alzheimers. This has proved to be an amazing experience - with the objects prompting memories and discussion of days that most people thought had long gone."

Marcus is very much looking forward to giving Tunbridge Wells a much-needed auction house again.

"People of Tunbridge Wells - this is your auction house. It's on your doorstep and we're operating an open-door policy," says Marcus. "Come down with anything you'd like valued and we'll be delighted to see you. Alternatively, I'd obviously be pleased to make home visits to view and value larger items."
