Does walking into shops stacked with Christmas cheer in early October make your heart sink and seem like shameless exploitation by retailers? Or in practice, is it actually a sensible idea?

5 Top Tips

1. Promote your Christmas offers

2. Start your Christmas advertising campaign

3. Organise your Christmas cards

4. Inform your staff of any promotions and offers

5. Organise client meetings for post Christmas lull

Perhaps we should all try and be a bit more organised this year.

Here are 10 productive things you can do to help you make the most of Christmas:

1. Christmas offers  Make sure you get any Christmas offers out on time so people can take advantage of them. Think of all the free ways to promote your Christmas offers – use twitter, Facebook and blogs. Put adverts or notices on your website and post links to special offers. An early start also gives the opportunity to deal with high demand, so any stock shortages can be overcome.

2. Advertising  Think about any advertising you want to do. You need your adverts ready to go in any of the publications or papers by mid October. If your advert runs from October through to December, this will improve your chances of seeing a return on your investment. Remember, even at this time of year, a one off advert doesn't work.

3. Email campaign Get your Christmas e-mail campaigns ready to go. Don't lose time in those vital final few weeks agonising over concepts and fine tuning.

4. Window space Start planning a promotion or window space for the 'golden quarter'. You need to make a great impact on customers during this crucial period, particularly if you are in a crowded or competitive area.

5. Christmas cards Get professionally designed cards that represent your business. Use recycled paper and hand write the cards if you can. This will be remembered and gives it the personal touch. Aim to get your cards delivered for the first week of December so plenty of people see them. If you must use off-the-shelf cards, buy charity cards so that the profits help others.

Electronic cards work very well too. We are offering a full range of bespoke printed cards, e-cards and e-games this year.

6. Gifts If you decide to send out a gift to your clients, make sure it’s of a good quality. Remember, you have spent all year offering a high quality service to your clients, so don't let them  remember you by the dodgy pen you send. If you can’t afford a good gift, don’t send one.

7. Update your website Think about giving the home page of your website a Christmas theme, this will make it look current and up to date. If you need a hand with this Contact us and we will happily give you some help.

8. Post Christmas lull Think ahead to the post Christmas lull. Look to get work booked and meetings in the diary for January by offering an incentive like a discount on their next order.

9. Inform your staff
Make sure all your staff know what’s going on. Tell them about your Christmas campaign or promotion so that they know about it when someone calls up.

10. Plan your Christmas party! Finally, make sure you've got your Christmas party sorted. You'll deserve it and so will your team!
