Uckfield companies pull together to support Friends of East Sussex Hospices

Uckfield companies pulled together on Tuesday 6 September to support Friends of East Sussex Hospices (FESH) in an event which raised a massive £6000.

The new film adaptation of ‘Jane Eyre' was given a charity premiere at The Picture House Uckfield three days ahead of its UK release on September 9.  The cinema's owner, Kevin Markwick - with the support of Universal Pictures - showed the film in all three of his screens, donating the proceeds to FESH.

The Marketing Eye - which has a close relationship with FESH and has supported the charity in a number of ways over the past few years - helped to secure two local sponsors for the event: Uckfield law firm, Dawson Hart, and accountancy firm, Swindells.

Nearly 300 people attended the event and enjoyed pre-film drinks and canapés at the Uckfield restaurant, Luna. Afterwards, around 130 people went back to Luna for dinner - which also raised funds for FESH. In addition, flowers were donated for the restaurant by The Flower Shop in Uckfield High Street.

"The whole evening saw Uckfield coming together to support FESH," says Neil Edwards, managing director of The Marketing Eye. "There was a real community spirit and we were delighted to have played a part in such an enjoyable and successful the evening."

Mahie Abey, partner and head of the matrimonial department at Dawson Hart, was delighted with how the event came together: "FESH do wonderful work across the county and the partners and staff at Dawson Hart were delighted to be able to support this event," he said. "The whole evening was hugely enjoyable and very well attended. The reception beforehand at Luna was great and our staff and guests loved the film."

Kathy Gore, chair of FESH, which supports nine hospices that serve the people of East Sussex, said: "Local sponsors helped to ensure that this special event was such a success. We are really grateful to the local businesses that supported and sponsored us: Kevin Markwick at The Picture House for donating all of the ticket money to FESH and Swindells, Dawson Hart and Luna Restaurant for their generous sponsorship."

The new adaptation of ‘Jane Eyre' features Mia Wasikowska in the title role, with Michael Fassbender as Edward Fairfax Rochester, Jamie Bell as St John Rivers and Judi Dench as Mrs Fairfax.

Kathy Gore said that Judi Dench had been invited to the premiere but sent her apologies and wished everyone: "A successful and enjoyable evening."

Kathy added: "The hospices we support have to find 75% of their funding themselves and they are all struggling in this economic climate, so any support makes a real difference. The very special care they provide patients and their families is invaluable.  Thank you to The Marketing Eye for all you've done in securing the sponsorship for us - it is truly appreciated.
