Virtual advertising on Street View

Friday, 29 January 2010

After filing a new patent, Google can now carry real-time ads on billboards and posters through its Street View mapping service. Google's software can identify a poster on the side of a building and replace it either as a hot link or through an advertising auction model, where clients can bid for space. This would mean that 'hyper-local' advertisers could use the technology to target their neighbourhood. However it could equally lead to brands trying to 'gate-crash' their competitors' territory.
