Young Business Minds 2014 underway

Young Business Minds 2014 underway

Our business competition for year-12 students - Young Business MindsTM - is well underway for this year. Teams from six colleges across Kent and East Sussex have developed their business plans and two teams from each college will be presenting these to the Young Business Minds judges next week.

Now in its fourth year, the annual inter-college competition, which was organised and developed by The Marketing Eye, is designed to give real focus to the time between year-12 exams and the end of the school year. Students taking part in the competition are divided into teams and work together to agree on a product or service idea, which they then develop into a business plan during a two-week period.

The plans have now been documented into written reports and, next Wednesday, the students will pitch their ideas to a panel made up of Neil Edwards from The Marketing Eye, Adrian Corbin from Scientifica, James Duggan from Simmons Gainsford and Hamish Smith from Rix & Kay.

Young Business Minds was won last year by a team from Uckfield Community Technology College called ‘Tavolo'. The winning team produced a business plan for a circular-shaped desk aimed at professional graphic/textile designers or architects. The desk provides the ability to include different elements, including, for instance, a light box, drawing area and computer space, allowing the user to have all the equipment they need to hand in one accessible space.

The standard of Young Business Minds' presentations has got better and better every year - so the judges have great expectations for Young Business Minds 2014.

The processes the teams go through will stand them in good stead as they approach their final year of ‘A' Level studies and look ahead to their careers or time at university.
