Plus Accounting director helps Brighton artist secure loan

Brighton artist, stonemason and landscape gardener, Floyd Kipling Bryan, was recently awarded a loan through the New Enterprise Allowance (NEA) - which he secured with help from his business mentor, Jamie Young, a director with Brighton based Plus Accounting.

Floyd's loan has been secured through Let's Do Business Group (LDBG), which has the contract to deliver NEA mentoring across Surrey and Sussex, and manage the loan scheme for the South of England.

"I greatly benefited from Jamie's mentoring," says Floyd. "In addition to helping me secure the loan, he also endorsed my business idea, which gave me confidence; helped me with my business plan; and assisted me with my budgets, which prevented me from wasting a sizable percentage of my limited resources on unproductive advertising."

Jamie provides mentoring on a voluntary basis through LDBG and his assistance with Floyd's business plan covered issues including marketing, sales and financials.

"I got involved with mentoring, as I wanted to help people to get out of the benefits system and set up in business, so they can develop as people," says Jamie. "My experience in advising businesses means I can make a difference."

Floyd's business enterprise encompasses a number of creative channels. For example, he paints or draws portraits, cityscapes, cartoons, murals and shop signs; he produces decorative ornaments such as fountains and gargoyles; and he is a landscaper, designing gardens.

"My plan is to establish a business which caters for customers who want visual stimulation which is personal and/or unique, whether it be in their home, workplace or leisure space," Floyd explains.

NEA is a Department for Work & Pensions (DWP) initiative, set up to help the long-term unemployed start-up in business by means of business mentoring, training and access to financial support - including a weekly allowance and access to start-up loans of up to £1,000.

"I am very pleased with the loan as it has enabled me to set things up, make a few mistakes and still keep my head above water," says Floyd. "Jamie has been very generous with his time and support. He has indicated to me that he is very happy to continue with our meetings, which are invaluable to me. That said, I also hope to maintain contact with him well into the future."

Adds Jamie: "Working with Floyd has been very rewarding - particularly helping him secure his loan."

While Jamie is continuing to support Floyd, he is currently hoping to mentor others in the future.

He adds: "LDBG distributes a list of people that need help and I am on the look-out for people who needed my skill set. I am about to start mentoring somebody else, which I am looking forward to."
